Stream Classic Migration

Overview

On April 15, 2024, Microsoft retired Stream (Classic) and introduced a new version of Stream (on SharePoint). This transition required WWU to move all videos to the new platform. This migration is now complete.

For moved videos, links and embeds will continue to work anywhere they are posted (including Canvas) until February 15, 2025.  These must then be updated to new links/embed codes in order to function.

Where can I find my migrated videos?

Note that once your videos have been migrated to Stream (on SharePoint), it may take up to two days for them to be removed from Stream (Classic). You may see your videos in Stream (Classic) during this time, but they will not be available.

  • Stream (Classic) videos that were originally contained in an individual user's account will be migrated to your OneDrive in a folder called "Stream Migrated Videos." For a detailed walkthrough, please see "Stream Video Migration for Individual Accounts."
  • Stream (Classic) videos that were originally contained in a Microsoft 365 group will be migrated to an analogous SharePoint site, in a folder call "Stream Migrated Videos."  For a detailed walkthrough, please see "Microsoft 365 Stream Videos."

Timeline

2024

  • January 31, 2024 - No new Stream live events can be created, any Stream live event scheduled after January 31, 2024, will be automatically removed.
  • February 12, 2024 - Last date WWU users can reliably access old content to clean up, delete, or download videos on the old Stream (Classic) system.
  • February 12 - April 15, 2024 - ATUS will work to move all published videos from the old Stream (Classic) platform to the new Stream (on SharePoint) platform.
  • April 15, 2024 - Stream (Classic) is fully retired & automatically disabled.
    • Videos in a published state will have been moved to the new Stream (on SharePoint) platform.
    • Users & admins no longer able to access or use Stream (Classic).
    • Stream (Classic) videos in an unpublished state or those not associated with active users that was not included in the moved to Stream (on Sharepoint) will be deleted.
  • April 15 2024 - February 15, 2025 - Links/embed codes to moved videos will redirect and continue to function. Prior to this end date, videos in Stream (on SharePoint) will need to be relinked and re-embedded into Canvas courses.

2025

  • January 15, 2025 - ATUS will remind users to update links/embeds prior to 2/15/25 when redirects stop working.
  • February 15, 2025 - Stream (Classic) links and embed codes will no longer redirect to the migrated videos in OneDrive & SharePoint. These will need to be updated in Canvas, etc. with the new links/embed codes in order to work again.

Option to Transition from Stream to Panopto

Since links and embed codes in web or Canvas content will ultimately have to be updated manually, employees using Canvas may opt to download Stream videos that are still in use and upload to Panopto rather than use videos from the new Stream (on SharePoint) platform. This can be done before or after the move.

Benefits

  • One Academic Collection: This is helpful if faculty are already using Panopto for other videos to have all videos on one platform that is directly integrated in Canvas.
  • Canvas Access: Panopto videos can be managed via an easily accessible "Video Library" Canvas course.
  • Auto-Captioning: Like Stream, Panopto Video automatically captions videos upon upload.
  • Automated and Customized Permissions: Permissions can be automated to allow all users in specific Canvas courses to view specific videos or to allow specific individuals or groups to have view or edit access.
  • User Statistics: Panopto videos include detailed user statistics, including which portions of each video have been seen by which users.
  • Interactivity and Assignment Potential: Panopto videos can be set up with embedded quiz questions which can also be set up as Canvas assignments that will appear in the Canvas gradebook. Folders can be set up for students to create videos within a course without any other software or hard drive requirements.
  • Expanded Edit Capability: Panopto videos can be edited via the web platform throughout the entire video, not just trimmed at the beginning or end.

Drawbacks

  • Pre-existing video data from Stream will be lost such as customized caption, user statistics, and shared permission settings.
  • The process of downloading the videos and uploading to Panopto takes extra time.
