Phishing Emails: Disbursement of funds

Status: Resolved

3/14/25

Hello, a number of people at Western have received phishing emails regarding financial aid disbursements in the last few weeks. Today, one was sent titled FW: Disbursement of funds with an attachment titled BANKMOBILE FINANCIAL AID REFUND SPRING 2025.docx.

These messages are not legitimate and should be ignored. Our Information Security team is currently working on addressing this particular phishing attempt.

More generally, no office at WWU will request your Universal Account, nor Bankmobile credentials in email such as this. The use of attachments with instructions is also a method used by malicious actors to circumvent spam filters.

For more information regarding phishing and how to identify and report these types of attacks we encourage reviewing our article on the phishing scams.
