MFA Protection For All Accounts

"Multifactor authentication is coming" image. Help protect your account. Passwords are not enough. Set up your second factor today.

Responding to the University’s need for greater safety and security, all computing accounts will be enrolled in multifactor authentication during the Winter 2023 term.

Multifactor Authentication, or MFA, is a common protection for computing accounts. Passwords alone are no longer enough to stop cyber-attacks. MFA provides an additional layer of security for each account. Once enrolled into MFA, you will occasionally be prompted for a second factor such as a code via text messaging or the authentication app.

On January 24, 2023, Western will begin enrolling all accounts into MFA protection. The enrollment will be performed in groups with a new group identified each week. Expect to receive an email reminder approximately one week before your account is enrolled.

Since MFA relies on a second factor, you will need to keep a second factor up-to-date within your Microsoft Account Portal found under Security Info. We recommend using the Microsoft Authenticator application though several alternatives are also available. We further recommend that you ensure your second factor is set before your enrollment date. Once enrolled, you will be required to have that second factor set. Registering your second factor before your enrollment date will prevent disruption to accessing your account.

We expect to have all accounts enrolled in MFA by the end of the winter quarter, 2023.
