Update Java for Administrative Application Access
Java is a programming language and computing platform used at Western primarily for Administrative Applications such as Banner, TEM, Nolijweb, AiM, and Datawarehouse and other administrative applications. Most administrative applications require the 32bit version of Java.
It is currently recommended to keep your version of java as up to date as possible. There are primarily two methods used to update java.
- Update via Java Control Panel
- Update via Java.com
- Make sure all browsers are closed before you begin
- Start the install executable
- Make sure to uncheck the option to install toolbars
Determine the Java version
Windows
- Open the Control Panel
- Click on Java to open the Java Control Panel
- Select the General tab
- Click on the About… button.
- The Java version will be listed in the About Java window
Install Java Update
If Java is already installed, the update can be installed from within the application.
Windows
- Open the Control Panel
- Click on Java to open the Java Control Panel
- Select the Update tab
- Click on the Update Now button
Build the Site List
- Edit tab
- Add Site(s)
- Restore the Security Prompts
Clear Cache
Equally important is to clear the Java cache between versions. To clear cache:
- Under Temporary Internet Files>Settings
- Temporary Files Settings>Delete File
Additional Notes
Sometimes Java 64bit is installed on a machine and interferes with the 32 bit version. Sometimes Toolbar Installers will interfere with a connection. Those can also be uninstalled with the client's permission.
