New Outlook Desktop Client

The New Outlook Desktop Client

Microsoft had started development on a new Outlook desktop client with public tests occurring last year in an effort to unify the email experience within Outlook on Windows, macOS, the web and mobile devices. Microsoft is now offering the new client and desktop Outlook experience to those that opt-in. Benefits include a more cohesive user interface when working in the desktop and web, enhanced support for integration with other M365 products and support for AI models. The new Outlook client is in active development so the user experience when using it may change over time.

To opt-in simply slide the toggle title "Try the New Outlook" in top right of the Inbox to the right.

There are some features, such as mail merge and the ability to open archival .pst files that are not yet supported by the new client. If you use these features, you will want to remain on the Classic version of Outlook until these features are matured in the new client. Microsoft has created a Getting started with the new Outlook for Windows - Microsoft Support webpage with further details on new features and changes with the new Outlook.

If you have found yourself on the new client and find that a feature you require for a business process is not yet supported you can revert back by Toggling out of the new Outlook for Windows preview - Microsoft Support for Windows or if you are on a Apple computer, by using this guide detailing How to revert back to Outlook 2016 - Microsoft Support for macOS.

Microsoft has committed to supporting the Classic Outlook until at least 2029, but individuals are able to upgrade at any time before then. It is likely that Western will adopt the new Outlook as a standard prior to this date.
